"Would Rather" vs "Prefer": mesmo significado, gramáticas diferentes
Ambos expressam preferência — mas a estrutura gramatical de cada um é completamente diferente. Misturá-las cria erros clássicos.
WOULD RATHER — preferência imediata
Would rather é seguido de infinitivo sem to (bare infinitive). Expressa preferência em uma situação específica.
- I would rather stay home tonight. — Prefiro ficar em casa esta noite.
- She'd rather drink tea than coffee. — Ela prefere chá a café.
- Would you rather walk or take a taxi? — Você prefere caminhar ou pegar um táxi?
⚠️ Nunca: "I would rather to go" — o to não existe após would rather.
PREFER — preferência geral
Prefer expressa preferência em geral. Pode ser seguido de gerúndio (-ing) ou infinitivo (to + verb).
- I prefer reading to watching TV. — Prefiro ler a assistir TV.
- She prefers to wake up early. — Ela prefere acordar cedo.
- We prefer going by train. — Preferimos ir de trem.
